California Summer Staff 2017 – A to Z

I love Jewish summer camp! This is my 36th summer at camp and 11th summer in Jewish camping. I was born in NY, grew up in NJ and now love living in Southern California. When not at work I love to play tennis, hike and relax on the beach.

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Leadership – because as the director I’m here to help develop future leaders of the Jewish people.
  • Favorite Sports Team: New York Yankees, mostly because my dad was a big fan
  • What is your favorite hobby outside of sports? Hiking with our dog
  • What is your favorite sports rivalry? Yankees v Red Sox

 

Alli McKain, South Carolina
Athletic Director

I am a multi-sport athlete, a fierce competitor, and a seasoned coach. Sports are my passion, and my passion is contagious. Sports have shaped who I am as an Athletic Director. As an athlete I learned to push past my limits, I learned perseverance and discipline, and I developed confidence. As a coach, I want the same for my players. I train strong Jewish athletes. I played and coached soccer, basketball, rugby, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. I focus on mechanics and fundamentals. My players learn discipline, they see results, they grow more confident, and that shapes their character. I love seeing our campers grow through that process each summer.

  • If you could have dinner with any famous athlete who would it be? Pele, the “King of Soccer”. He is one of the greatest, most influential athletes of all time! He is regarded for his strength and ability to overcome adversity

Andy “AC” Swedlove, Riverside, CA
Logistics & Program Assistant

I have been involved with Jewish summer camping for 15 summers from California to New York and many states in between. While camping has always been a passion of mine, it will never compare to my love of sports. When I am not working you can typically find me playing basketball, baseball, football or ultimate frisbee with my friends.

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Teamwork because everything you do in today’s world involves or affects someone else. So being able to work in a team is incredibly valuable.
  • Favorite Sports Team: Los Angeles Clippers
  • If you could have dinner with any famous athlete who would it be? Shaquille O’Neal because he and his personality are far bigger than basketball.
  • What is your hidden talent? I can do basketball spinning tricks (think Harlem Globetrotters)
  • What is on your workout playlist? Tons of R. Kelly and Notorious BIG but anyone who knows me knows that Whoomp there it is, is my jam.

 

Anthony Naso, Cleveland, OH
Head Baseball Coach

I grew up in Amherst, Oh- a suburb of Cleveland on Lake Erie. Baseball is my life. I studied Psychology and Business Administration while playing baseball at Slippery Rock University of PA. After graduation, I began coaching right away for Canisius College in Buffalo, Ny. I then went on to play professionally in the Dutch MLB, in Doredrecht, Holland, the Netherlands. I am currently the Pitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for Clarion University of PA.

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Balance of everything is important so it’s hard for me to pick just one but I’ve found that intent helps athletes stay mindful of teamwork, leadership, growth and pride.
  • Favorite Sports Team: Cleveland Indians
  • If you could have dinner with any famous athlete who would it be? Bob Feller. He voluntarily entered the army at the beginning of WW2 for 3 years of his prime, returned and still made the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was a man first and baseball player second.
  • What is your pregame ritual? Eating Protein, Breathing, Stretching the body and the mind
  • What is your favorite sports rivalry? Ohio State vs Michigan

 

Blake Winston, Big Island, HI
Counselor/Assistant Coach – Baseball

I moved to Hawaii when I was 11 years old from San Clemente, California. I’ve been playing baseball since I was five years old. I played baseball all four years on my varsity high school team. I’m going to be studying finance at Arizona State University’s honors college.

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? The core value that I most identify with is growth because in life, school, work, and in sports there is always room to improve and get better.

  • What are your hobbies outside of sports? My favorite hobbies outside of sports are going to the beach and surfing or photography.

Bobby Schwartz, Austin, TX
Head Basketball Coach

Ever since I was a kid I dreamed of being a coach and I’ve worked hard to make that dream come true. I coached College Basketball for a long time and made great connections with players and fans. I am dedicated to developing young players both as players to help them reach their goals to play in high school and earn college scholarships and also as people who learn to work hard to reach their goals and become leaders in our nation.

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Leadership. I have spent my career helping coach players to be the leaders of tomorrow.

Danielle Lewis
Counselor/Assistant Coach – Swim

Hi, I’m Danielle from Los Angeles! I have been in love with swimming since I was 9 months old and started water polo in 9th grade. I also love writing, thrifting, walking my dog, eating thai food, going to the beach, karaoke, watching crime shows and any show that will make me laugh. I play music as often as I can and I love to dance (badly). My favorite foods are mac n cheese, grilled cheese, sushi, and most desserts. I am so excited for the summer! 🙂

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Growth. Sports not only help us grow/improve physically. The growth extends to various aspects of ourselves. When I swim, I rarely improve numbers-wise. Maybe once every few weeks I’ll get faster by a few milliseconds. However, my attitude and confidence improve every day. During my high school swimming years, I have seen myself go from a nervous swimmer who never asks to be put in extra races to a more confident swimmer who is up for more challenges (I still get pretty nervous before a race, though).

  • If you could have dinner with any famous athlete who would it be? Jesse Owens – I would love to have dinner with someone as fearless and bold as Jesse Owens and to hear his story.

David Hughey, Pasadena, CA
Office/Logistics Staff & Communications Assistant

My name is David Hughey and I am currently a student at UC Davis and I am going to graduate this spring. I love a variety of different sports, but my favorite sports are basketball, football, and soccer. My favorite sports teams are the LA Lakers and the Oakland Raiders. I worked at 6 Points Sports in North Carolina before college and I’m excited to be here in California this summer!

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Teamwork. Since I have always played the point guard position, I really enjoy getting all of my teammates involved and seeing them succeed.

Dori SingerCincinnati, OH
Program & Communications Coordinator

My name is Dori and I am so excited to be coming back to 6 Points this summer! I grew up dancing, cheering, and playing lacrosse and spending my summers at various Jewish summer camps and love merging my passion for camping and sports in one place at 6 Points! As the Program and Communications Coordinator this summer, I’m looking forward to helping create magic and camp and then share it with the outside world. So don’t forget to smile for the camera; it’s going to be a great summer!

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why?  The Core Value I most identify with is Intention (Kavanah). I believe that as athletes we must be intentional with our every move: what food we eat to give us the fuel we need, what stretches we do to prepare our bodies to play, what moves we make on the field to win. When we live intentionally, we are being mindful about our actions and the greater impact that they will make not only on us, but on others as well. It is my hope to live an intentional life and inspire others to live intentionally as well.
  • Favorite Sport: Lacrosse
  • What is your hidden talent? A (not so) hidden talent is that I’m a HUGE Disney fan and can quote the whole movie Tangled!
  • What’s your favorite hobby outside of sports? When I’m not at camp, you can catch me watching Disney movies, taking pictures, going on adventures in my Chacos, or searching for the perfect taco.
  • What is your favorite sports rivalry? As a ASU graduate, I love a good ASU vs UofA football game… Go Sundevils!

 

Emma Schneir, San Diego, CA
Counselor/Assistant Coach – Basketball & Communications Assistant

My name is Emma and I am so excited to be returning to 6 points for my fifth summer! I attended 6 points North Carolina for three years as a camper and this will be my second summer as a counselor in California. I attend Butler University in Indiana where I play on the Club Basketball team. I can’t wait to get back to camp!

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Sportsmanship because after the game is over you are no longer seen as a player but rather a person. Therefore it is important that when you are on field or court your actions are reflective of who you are as a person.

Born and raised in San Diego, I am true Southern Californian with a love for the water, Mexican food, easy-going lifestyle, and traffic. I have been a registered nurse for 4 years. I enjoy tennis, dogs, family, and travel.

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Teamwork–because the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

  • Favorite Sports Team: Definitely not the Patriots.
  • If you could have dinner with any famous athlete who would it be? Roger Federer. Federer would be great to meet because not only is he humble and down to earth, he is also great individual, on and off the court. He is the true ambassador of the sport.
  • What is your hidden talent? Scottish Highland Dancing, fluent in Spanish, excellent Filipino accents

Head Swim Coach

An Israeli native, hiking and summer lover, currently reside in Boston, lived and studied in Indiana doing sport psychology and counseling; passionate about long-distance triathlon/Ironman, loves military-related movies, the show “Friends”, and good mouse chocolate.

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Intention, I believe that pure passion for the sports (or any other activity), intrinsic motivation and high level of commitment and responsibility are the basic for success in sports and other domains.

Jacob Friedman, Irvine, CA
Song Leader & Counselor

I was born and raised in Southern California and I’ve been involved in numerous sports since I was around six years old, from the conventional soccer and water polo, to the less conventional wrestling and parkour. My biggest passion is for music. I’ve been playing guitar for ten years and song leading for Jewish organizations for five years now. I grew up at Jewish summer camp learning to love singing and it’s really helped me to increase my confidence in all kinds of social settings. I hope I can bring a love of music to 6 Points this summer and I hope I can show our campers what it’s like to bring a passion for fitness and music together to make something new and exciting!

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? I identify most with the core value of Growth. My coaches have never said “Practice makes perfect”, but they’ve always told me “Practice makes better”. I aspire to be the best I can be but I know it will take work to get there.
  • Favorite Sport: Wrestling
  • If you could have dinner with any famous athlete who would it be? I would love to eat dinner with the boxer, Muhammad Ali. I would just love to hear his perspective on training and perseverance.
  • What is your hidden talent? I can actually make a mean balloon animal. Dogs are my specialty.
  • What is on your workout play list? I always have to start with the theme from Rocky and then anything by Metallica

 

Jake Axelbank, Chapel Hill, NC

Tar Heel born and bred. I love climbing, movies, and the ocean. I have been playing soccer since I was 4 years old and coaching since 17. My mom is the best cook I know.

Jerry Simon, Los Angeles, CA
Head Basketball Coach

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, attended Marshall High School where we won the LA City Championship and I led the state of California in scoring. I went on to play college basketball at Penn for four years where we played UNC in the NCAA tournament and I was all-Ivy League. Then, I played eleven years of professional basketball in Israel with Galil Elion where we won the Israeli Championship over Maccabi Tel Aviv. During that time I made aliyah, served in the IDF and became fluent in Hebrew. I currently teach at Marina HS and have coached basketball at the high school, JCC Maccabi, and youth level since I retired from playing.

Jonathan Silberman, New York, NY
Director of Jewish Life

I am very excited to be joining everyone at camp this year. This is my first year working as a staff member at camp and part of my new career as a teacher in Jewish education. I am a former soccer player and swimmer, coached AYSO soccer coach, and was a residential contractor until I changed careers recently. I am a father of three great kids and am married for a long time.

Camp Nurse

I’ve been working as a camp nurse during the summers for many years. During the off-season I am a school nurse, home health nurse and infusion nurse. I’m married with 2 amazing kids and I’m so excited to be working in LA this summer because it gives me a chance to see my daughter who lives here.

Camp Nurse

I was born in the West Indies; Jamaica and raised in the USA on the East cost Maryland. I love to watch all sports but enjoy volleyball and archery. I became a nurse because I love working with people. I have been a nurse for 29 extraordinary years. I am enjoying my current position as a very busy K-8 school nurse and look forward to being at camp this summer with my two sons.

Max Teitelbaum, Toronto, ON, Canada

My name is Max, I’m from Toronto in Canada, and I study Political Studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. I have a twin sister that looks nothing like me, and a younger sister that looks almost exactly like me. Although I’m Canadian, I unfortunately do not own a polar bear. I am really really good at Mario Kart Wii. My favourite movie from my childhood was The Mighty Ducks, where a rag-tag group of young hockey players overcome the odds and win the championship.

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Teamwork is the one I identify with most, because sports like basketball, baseball and soccer aren’t won by individual talent, but rather the ability for all members of the team to act together and win as a unit. I have played team sports for years, and I know first hand that a bad team player, no matter how much individual skill they have, tend to struggle in the game, and their team along with them. In my experience, a team victory is the most rewarding of all.

Maxanne Retzlaff, Claremont, CA
Head Tennis Coach

Max’s coaching career began at Brooklyn College where she coached for four years before taking time off to get her Master’s degree. After earning her M.S. she became the Head Coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges where she forged the Athenas tennis team as a perennial SCIAC power and one of the best teams in the nation. 2011 saw her team win their 13th SCIAC title and Kristin Lim become the first Athena to win the NCAA Singles Title. Her 2006 squad finished third in the nation, the best finish by any CMS women’s team in any sport. A great player in her own right she was on scholarship at St. John’s and was the team MVP in both 1982 and 1984. After graduating she played for the US Maccabi team from 1987-91 and won two golds (in Australia) and a bronze (in Venezuela). She lives in Claremont with her husband Steve and their sons, Reggie, Jake and Danny.

My name is Maya and I’m from Tel Aviv. I love photography, art and music. In my spare time I hang out with my friends and travel to new places. I’m excited to be at camp this summer!

  • If you could have dinner with any famous athlete who would it be? Serena Williams. she represents strength and ambition, and that if you work hard for what you want you will accomplish it.
  • What is your favorite hobby outside of sports? listening to and playing music, taking photos and painting

I’m live in the Negev Desert and I finished the army  service almost a year ago. I’ve been playing tennis for over 9 years and can’t wait to be at camp with you!

Rachel Slaton, Austin, TX
Associate Camp Director

Born and raised in Austin, TX competing in everything from gymnastics to basketball to volleyball, I fell in love with sports at the same time that I feel in love with being Jewish. Being an NCAA athlete (Southwestern University, Volleyball) is something I’m deeply proud of, especially our conference championship and NCAA Regional Tournament run my senior year.  I knew I wanted to open a Jewish sports camp after I spent my college summers working at URJ Camp Swig & Newman and spent my time in the off-season coaching club volleyball. I have been coaching for over 10 years now with the goal of cultivating a growth mindset in each athlete with whom I have the honor of working. I have a wonderful husband, Rich, and a spunky, brilliant dog named Daniel Boone.

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Definitely growth – cultivating a growth mindset is the key to a successful, fulfilling life. I believe that being open to failure, taking risks and trying new things outside of your comfort zone is the most important gift an athlete, and a human being, can give to themselves.

Rafi Nahom, Tel Aviv, Israel/Los Angeles, CA
Head Soccer Coach

Born and raised in Israel I developed my passion for soccer; in America, after college, I developed my passion for coaching. Now I have been coaching for going on 10 years and over the past year I have attained my US Soccer National Level C License. In addition to that I began coaching at the High School level and help lead the Brentwood School (population 450) Girls Varsity to the Gold Coast League Championship, CIF Division 4 Finals, and CIF Southern Regional Finals in my 1st year there. I believe in using sport to develop yourself not just physically but mentally, as well as, using it as a tool to be a model citizen.

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Growth because striving to always better yourself in all aspects of life is how you develop not just physically but mentally.

  • If you could have dinner with any famous athlete who would it be? Not really a athlete but a coach, Sir Alex Ferguson, because he is the coach I try to model myself after. Not coaching just to develop the player in the game but to become a father figure and help develop the player as an athlete and a person.
  • What is your hidden talent? I can touch my nose with my tongue.
  • What is your favorite hobby outside of sports? Fishing, going to the beach and being outdoors.

 

Sam Brodkey, Santa Cruz, CA
Athletic Trainer

Hi I’m Sam, I’m currently finishing up my masters degree in athletic training at the University of Hawaii. I’m an avid surfer from Santa Cruz, California, with a love of all things ocean. I’m a former NFTYite, and excited to be working at 6 Points this summer!

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Growth: Watching your own improvements, or the improvements of your teammates from the beginning of a season to the end is one of the most rewarding experiences there is.

  • If you could have dinner with any famous athlete who would it be? Kelly Slater: 11 world titles and counting, I mean he’s the GOAT of surfing.
  • What is your hidden talent? Juggling

 

Sam Clark, Carlsbad, CA
Counselor/Assistant Coach – Tennis & Soccer

I am a graduating senior of Carlsbad High School, and a captain of the track team. My main events are the 4X100, the 4X400, and the 300 Hurdles. In addition to track, I play soccer and tennis both of which I love! I will be attending UCLA for Mathematics and Biomedical research in the Fall of 2017.

  • Favorite Sports Team: Baltimore Ravens
  • If you could have dinner with any famous athlete who would it be? Lolo Jones because she balances hurdles and bobsled, a very interesting combination of Olympic sports.
  • What is your hidden talent? I play the saxophone and the piano
  • What is your pre-game ritual? I visualize the game/race and imagining myself running the best I’ve ever run. Then I stretch, do active warm-ups and get in the starting blocks.

Born in Eilat so I love to snorkel and scuba dive and I love living in Israel! I love sports, especially basketball, and like to have fun and laugh a lot. I can’t wait to get started at camp!

  • Of our 6 core values, which one do you identify with the most and why? Teamwork, I like to work with my teammates and colleagues, it’s makes everything easier, more fun and helps everyone be a better person.
  • Favorite Sport: Basketball
  • Favorite Sports Team: Hapoel Jerusalem basketball and Hapoel Tel Aviv soccer
  • If you could have dinner with any famous athlete who would it be? Dwayne Wade, looks like a nice guy and he’s a role model to me
  • What is your hidden talent? If I hadn’t played basketball I would probably be an actor
  • What is your favorite hobby outside of sports? Watching movies and playing with gadgets
