The Gifts of Camp

Taylor Froomin, pictured second from the right, shares her experience from this summer in California.

6 Points Sports Academy has given me many things since my first summer there in 2014. I’ve made countless new friends and developed my soccer skills. When I found out that a new location was opening in LA, I jumped at the chance to be a leader in the new camp. When I arrived, I found out that there were only three girls that session—and one of them was my sister! This was dramatically different from North Carolina, where there had been 21 girls in my dorm the previous summer. However, the session turned out to be much better than I expected. Because of the small number of campers, we all got to know each other better. Also, we girls didn’t have to fight for shower time! That session felt special because it was all new. We were the first at this camp and we all knew that we were setting the scene for future summers.

One of the best parts of the summer was the 24/7 soccer. With only nine players in the soccer major, we were all able to hone our skills especially well. This is part of the magic of 6 Points: even with only nine kids in soccer, even rooming with my sister, I still had the most amazing summer. Even though it was very different from my previous summers in North Carolina, it ended up being the best summer of them all. I expected rooming with my sister to be a disaster, but it wasn’t. Being with her all day every day turned out much better than I thought, and we actually got closer as the session went on.

In LA, I found ample opportunities to become a leader. As one of the few people who had been to 6 Points North Carolina and as one of the oldest campers, it was natural for me to step into various leadership roles. One role that I am most proud of was being chosen as co-captain for Maccabiah. I never thought of myself as someone who could lead an event like Maccabiah, but I surprised myself.

6 Points also gave me the chance to try new things. Before going to LA, I’d never played rugby. When Coach Allie and Reed suggested I try it, I wasn’t so sure about it. But once I played, I was hooked. Reed helped me find a club where I live and I started playing. I just played in my first scrimmage and I can’t wait to play more.

6 Points has quite literally opened up worlds to me in the years since my first summer and I can hardly imagine what camp will give me next.
